Why don't you have grass in the outside yards? |
Because the health of your dog is important to us. Our outside yards are surfaced in pea gravel (small, rounded stones like on a beach) because we would be unable to sanitize grass. Additionally, since dog urine kills grass it would quickly turn to dirt and then regardless of weather conditions, our canine clients would be dirty during their stay and upon their return home. |
| |
Why do you have gravel in the outside yards? |
Pea gravel, is easy to sanitize and keep clean by spraying it with a hose and pet friendly yard sanitizer. Pea gravel is easy on most pet's feet, doesn't wear down and is very durable. Unlike loam or sand, our canine guests stay cleaner when they play on pea gravel. |

How much will my dog be out of his suite? |
Your pet will average 2 playtimes in the morning, 3 in the afternoon, and 2 in the evening. Each playtime is between 30 and 90 minutes. He will have a caregiver specifically assigned to his wing of the Resort to ensure he gets his playtimes outside. He will also get additional "nature calls" outings as needed. |
| |
How much time will my dog spend with people? |
Because lots of belly-rubs and caregiver interaction is essential for your pets happiness, we have a caregiver specifically assigned to your pet's wing who will always be nearby. |
| |
Is my dog ever left alone? |
Unlike most "kennels", where staff leave the building overnight, we have trained Caregivers on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your dog will NEVER be left alone at the Pet Planet Resort. |
| |
Will my dog be able to play with other dogs? |
Yes, if your dog is not aggressive and is altered (spayed or neutered). All of our outdoor playtimes include lots of dog to dog social interaction, in small playgroups specially selected for behavioral compatibility. If your pet is aggressive to other dogs or is intact (not spayed or neutered), his playtimes will be with his human caregivers only. |
| |
Why don't you have inside/outside runs? |
No dog should have to suffer drafty dog door, especially with Alberta's cold winters. Additionally, many dogs who aren't familiar with dog doors won't or can't use them and end up breaking their housetraining by eliminating in their sleeping area. This can be traumatic to a well housetrained dog. Because the Resort is staffed 24 hours a day, if your pet needs a nature break at any time (even in the middle of the night), we will gladly take him out for a supervised break. Our canine guests are always escorted by a human Caregiver whenever they are outside for their own safety and security. Your pet will also receive a lot more Caregiver interaction as every nature break is a great time to visit and romp with their Caregivers. |

What can I bring with my dog? |
You are encouraged to bring any possessions from home to help your dog feel more comfortable. This can be his favourite toys, bed, or even an armchair! |
| |
Should I bring a bed for my dog? |
Definitely! We encourage you to bring any pillows or comforters for your pets comfort, as most pets sleep better in their familiar bed. Raised cot-style beds are available at no charge at the Resort, but please be aware that should your dog chew or destroy the bed, it is yours to keep for a small fee. |

What can't I bring with my dog? |
Dishes, real bones and rawhides.
- We will provide stainless steel dishes for your dog, which are removed to be sanitized between each use. Because your pet's dishes would not stay with him during his vacation, there would be no way to ensure the correct dishes are sent home with him. Additionally, we cannot guarantee that your dishes from home are compatible with our sanitization process.
- Even though your pet may not be possessive of real bones at home, in the presence of other dogs he may feel the need to be. Also, your dog's neighbours will smell his bone, and may act aggressively in attempt to get it from him. We don't permit bones for the safety the Caregivers and all of the dogs in the Resort.
- Although your dog will be supervised at all times, your pet's Caregiver may not notice if while chewing he swallows a piece of rawhide. As rawhide is not digestible, this is a potentially dangerous situation. Rawhide can swell in your pet's stomach to four times its original size when he drinks water. We recommend beef chews which are digestible, so even if your pet should swallow a piece, it would pass harmlessly through his system.

What will my dog do all day? |
During the day we rotate all our canine guests in small groups for several outdoor playtimes with other canine guests (or his Caregiver alone if he is dog aggressive or not altered). Your dog will also enjoy in-suite game time with provided toys, belly-rubs and individual attention from his Caregivers, and a turn down biscuit before bed. If you selected one or more of our Spa options your dog will also enjoy this on the day you have specified. |
| |
What is included with his vacation? |
We include his food if you have selected the meals included program, and his dishes. His activity program, including playtimes with other dogs, and individual playtime with his Caregiver. He will also enjoy in-suite game times, a turn down biscuit before bed and lots of love! |
| |
What options can I include with his vacation? |
You can include hydrotherapy or swimming in the heated indoor pool, full service grooming (or just a bath and brush before coming home), full or half days of daycare and an optional raised bed and fatigue mat (if available). |
| |
Can I bring my dog's regular food with him? |
Yes. However, this does not change the price of his stay. |
| |
My dog eats raw food, can I bring it with him? |
For sanitary reasons and space restrictions we do not allow you to bring your own raw food. For dogs on a raw diet, we offer Horizon Pure, a chicken based raw complete-feed patty, at a competitive price of $1.00 per lb. This is not included in the price of your pet's stay. |
| |
If I use the meals included program, what will my dog eat? |
We offer your choice of 32 holistic and all natural diets, including products from Horizon Complete, Horizon Legacy, Eagle Pack and Royal Canin. |
| |
What if he doesn't like that food? |
If for any reason your dog is not eating during his stay and is on the meals included program, we will first add hot water to his food to make it more palatable. If he still is not interested in his food, we have several comparable lines to choose from on the meals included program and we are always able to find a food your dog will enjoy. |
| |
My dog takes medications regularly, will you administer them? |
Yes, we have fully trained caregivers that are capable of administering any type of medication. |
| |
My dog takes supplements, will you administer them? |
Yes, according to your written instructions. |
| |
Do you charge extra to administer medications or supplements? |
No, it is all part of your dog's full service Resort vacation. |
| |
Why are your suites made of cinder block instead of chain link? |
Cinder block is more hygienic as it is more easily sanitized, and safer for your pet as other pets cannot reach under or through it. Cinder block allows your dog some privacy during his stay, which will enable him to relax more easily. |
| |
Why are the suites dark coloured? |
The charcoal colour of the suites was specifically chosen in consultation with canine behaviourists to make the suites feel more den-like. While humans prefer openness and bright colours, dogs are den animals who prefer cozier surroundings to feel secure. |
| |
Why do you have cement floors? |
Every suite is sanitized daily with a high pressure hot water system. Cement floors not only stand up to this level of cleaning, they do not hold bacteria or other substances. |
| |
Will you take good care of him? |
Of course, like one of our own! Our Caregivers shifts are assigned by wing, so they see the same pets day after day and can establish a relationship and bond with them. They truly care about "their" dogs! |
| |
When can I drop him off? |
The check in times for your pet are 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Unfortunately we cannot accept check ins between 1:00 and 3:00 pm, as during this time we are sanitizing the suites. For safety reasons, we cannot make exceptions to this rule. |
| |
When can I pick him up? |
Our check out times are the same as check in times, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Unfortunately we cannot accept check outs between 1:00 and 3:00 pm, as during this time we are sanitizing the suites. For safety reasons we cannot make exceptions to this rule. |

My dog is aggressive to other dogs/people, can he still stay at the resort? |
Yes, and we thank you for letting us know about his personality in advance to better care for his safety and the safety of our Caregivers and other canine guests. Your pet will not participate in the group playtimes, although he will still get all of his playtimes with a human Caregiver specially educated to deal with aggression issues. |
| |
My dog is a senior, can he stay at the resort? |
Yes, we welcome senior pets. Please let us know any special needs he has and we will do our best to accommodate them. You can feel secure leaving your senior at the Pet Planet Resort, as our 24 hour staffing will check on him regularly throughout the night. |
| |
My dog is just a puppy, can he stay at the resort? |
Yes, as long as he is up to date with his puppy vaccinations. Staying at the Resort is a great way to socialize your puppy with other dogs and people who are not in his family. |
| |
My dog is not spayed/neutered, can he stay at the resort? |
Yes, although intact dogs are not permitted be part of the canine playgroups for safety. The only exception is if your female dog is pregnant. We do not accept bitches in any stage of pregnancy. Unborn puppies are particularly sensitive to any diseases, toxic agents or stresses affecting their mother, especially during the first twenty days of gestation. |
| |
Do you charge extra for intact/aggressive/senior/young dogs? |
No |
| |
Can my cat stay at the resort? |
We do not take cats at this time, although a feline Resort is a future possibility. Your pet's health and safety is our first concern and the unique needs of cats make caring for them a challenge. We do not have the facilities that cats need such as a separate air filtration system in the current Resort and Day Spa. |
| |

Can I bring two or more dogs? |
Yes |
| |
Will they be able to stay together in the same suite? |
Yes, unless your dogs are of the opposite sex and are not spayed or neutered. Unaltered animals of the opposite sex may not stay together, even if they are from the same family. You may select either a double suite or a single suite. If your dogs are very large or giant breeds, we do not recommend putting more than one dog in a single suite. Their comfort is our primary concern. |
