Various reports indicate that Canadians are estimated to spend nearly $4 billion on their pet this year from food and toys, kennels, grooming, training to veterinary services. Canadians spend more on their pets than they do on toys and candy combined. There is no region in Canada that hasn't experienced this increased level of demand for pet products and services.
The APPMA (American Pet Product Manufacturers Association Inc.) projects Americans to spend $38.4 billion, up 100% from ten years ago. This trend shows absolutely no indication of slowing down. In fact, the business and financial community believes the pet industry will grow at an average rate of between 6 and 8% annually. Actual spend in the United States in 2005 was $36.3 billion.
Of that $38.4 billion, $15.2 billion of that will be spend on pet food, 9.4 billion on veterinary services, $9.3 billion on supplies/OTC medicine, $2.7 billion on services like grooming, boarding, daycare and training and $1.8 billion on live animal purchases.
